A good tent is meant to help keep you dry and warm as well as keeping biting insects away. Tents can make a big difference in your camping trip, but they do not have to carry a big price tag. If you know what to look for and how to shop, you can save yourself a lot of money.

Tent Size

There are different sizes of tents, generally labeled by how many people they sleep. Environmental Features

After you have decided on the size and shape you want, think about where and when you will be camping. Some tents are lighter weight, designed for summertime camping only. Others are built of heavier materials to withstand stronger weather conditions.

If you plan to camp in an area with lots of mosquitos or other biting insects, you may want to consider a style with a screened in “porch”. If there is a possibility of rain, you will want a tent roof or cover to throw over the top of your tent for extra protection. Covers usually come as part of the tent package, but check to make sure.

Tent Weight

If you need a lightweight tent for backpacking, look for a smaller style with less stakes and poles and fewer features. If the weather is warm enough, you may prefer a tarp as opposed to a tent. There are no stakes or poles required, since the tarp can be tied between trees.

Cost

Generally, the smaller and simpler the tent is, the cheaper the price tag. Once you start adding on size, extra features and more durable materials for colder weather conditions, the price goes up. You do not have to go with a name brand maker to get a high-quality tent. Camouflage Camp

My boys and I decided to go camping one of the weekends during the beautiful and warm summer in California. As the boys are 5,7 and 12 years old, they felt responsible of building their own tents and taking care of their own food. My little boys turned men before I know it!

We left home on Saturday morning around 8am and we drove 2 hours away to this stunning in beauty place outside Los Angeles, where you could still see the city from the distance but enjoy the woods and the clear fresh air as well. We build our huge tent within 30 minutes and we set up the fire place and the kitchen area very close to the truck so we would not have to carry everything from one place to another. As we were going for the extreme camping experience, I brought with us bunch of camouflage nettings so we could cover the little kitchen and even put some on top of the tent or truck as needed.

My boys decided that the camo netting is necessary to bring in case a beer will attack us or some other dangerous animal.

For dinner we had can soups, beans and bread. We made our own fireplace as we were able to cook everything on it and still stay warm. My boys had so much fun together and it was great seeing the family in one place while laughing and telling stories. Our trip was definitely interesting and fun.  We might have to do it again soon!

Summer Camps

Summer camps for children are a great way to introduce them to nature and allow them to appreciate outdoor activity. Although some might think of “Summer Camps” as an elitist idea in country like India, but that’s not true. A growing urban population with changing lifestyles has resulted in children having less contact with the natural world. And all this is having a huge impact on our children’s health and development.

In a recent study carried out in Britain, some interesting findings came out.  It was found that “the distance our kids stray from home on their own has shrunk by 90% since the 70s; 43% of adults think a child shouldn’t play outdoors unsupervised until the age of 14. More children are now admitted to British hospitals for injuries incurred falling out of bed than falling out of trees.” Now if you think this scenario is alien to India, you should check it by yourself and survey your neighbourhood to see if there is any difference.

“There’s a paradox,” says Stephen Moss, naturalist, broadcaster and author.

“More kids today are interested in the natural world than ever before; they watch it on the telly; they may well visit a nature reserve or a National Trust site with their families. But far fewer are experiencing it directly, on their own or with their friends, and that’s what counts: this is about more than nature.” “I was out on my own and with my friends all the time, from the age of about eight,” says Moss, now 50. “Climbing trees, building dens, collecting birds’ eggs and frogspawn. Today, parents don’t even want their kids to get dirty.”

There have been so many other studies and findings by expert that point out the dwindling outdoor activity in nature and its resulting ill-effects on children. This lack of interaction with nature and outdoors has been so acute that the American writer Richard Louv, author of the bestseller Last Child in the Woods, has defined the phenomenon as “nature deficit disorder”.

Not all is lost though.  With new challenges posed by new lifestyles also comes new opportunities, and going out on camping or other outdoor activities provide another tool to get acquainted with outdoors. You also need to decide which family tent shape works best for you.

The two most common designs are cabin and dome tents. A cabin tent resembles the shape of a house or cabin. They are usually roomier and will allow an average-sized adult to stand up inside the tent. A dome is more igloo-shaped and generally don’t have the same headroom as the cabin style. Both family tents usually come with a zip-down divider which will give some privacy. Or you can leave the divider up and have one large, common sleeping place.

 

Dome family tents are simpler in design to set up. They also travel easier-the stakes and tent can fit into one backpack for easy hiking. Dome tents are preferable in areas where you may expect high winds, since the shape stands up better and you run less of risk of collapsing due to the conditions.

 

Cabin family tents require a bit more practice setting up and, their shape may make them more prone to collapse. Cabin tents also require more effort to pack. Usually the poles are in one bag, while the tent itself is another. Remember though, cabin tents usually provide more room and much more “walking space” inside.

 

Both types of tents make excellent accommodations for family tent camping. Regardless of what type to family tent you decide to purchase, always remember to have some type of ground cloth underneath the bottom of your tent. It will keep the inside of the tent drier and will protect it from any jagged edges from rocks or branches. A painter’s tarp is cheap and effective ground cloth that will protect your tent for many years to come.

 

Two last things to keep in mind. Always practice putting your family camping tent together in your backyard before your trip. You don’t want to be caught in the middle of nowhere with a tent that can’t be raised. Also, spend a couple of dollars on some extra spikes. They can break from damage or be misplaced during your trip.

Fun Activities For All the Family When Camping Or Travelling

Fun activities can be created easily when you use your imagination. When you are camping or travelling it’s always handy to have a few ideas of activities to do when someone gets a bit bored or grumpy. They can be a great distraction when the need arises.

The following may be helpful suggestions to do just that and these tips do not require expensive devices, batteries or equipment.  All you need is an open mind and a fun attitude.

Look about Keep them busy looking about your surroundings, find interesting nature things to look at and talk about, plan with them what you are going to do later or the next day.

20 Questions One person thinks of a ‘thing’. The other players ask 20 questions to guess what the ‘thing’ is. This game is not only fun for kids it improves their creative and reasoning skills.

The Object Game   This uses the reverse logic of the 20 questions game.

In the this game, one player continues to give clues about a particular object, animal or anything you like suitable The player who guesses the object first is the winner.

Camp Cooking   Everyone can help even little kids can be involved, older kids may be able to cook a meal themselves.

Start a Travel Diary Write and draw about your holiday, add brochures, postcards and your own drawings. Photos can be added later. If you are on a longer holiday write an entry for each day. It will great to look back on forever.

Start a short story Start with a single word.  This word should set up a sentence or story so it can be continued – eg.Tomorrow….. Next person adds on the next word.

Each person has to remember what the previous person has said and add a word.  You are guaranteed to end up with a very silly sentence. Can be done with a few people or a group. Great Fun!

Treasure Hunt Start a Treasure hunt, could be done with something obvious with coloured cups or something like that. And the first one to find the most wins or the first one to find them all in the shortest time wins.

 Watch the Clouds use your imagination, lie on a picnic rug and look up the clouds if there is any and describe what they look at. Can you see a dog, a ship or anything else.
